Contributions to the distribution and diversity of birds in Guatemala

Bird diversity and distribution in Guatemala

Updating information on bird distribution

We published several compilations of bird records in individual papers, chapters and books, including an update on the inventory, distribution, and residency status of birds in Guatemala (Eisermann & Avendaño 2018), an annotated checklist of the birds of Guatemala (Eisermann & Avendaño 2007), a chapter on avian diversity in Guatemala including a bibliography of Guatemalan ornithology (Eisermann & Avendaño 2006), a compilation on the distribution of Highland Guan (Eisermann et al. 2006). Knut Eisermann compiled from 2004 to 2015 noteworthy bird records from Guatemala as a contribution to the Central America section in the journal North American Birds (Jones 2004-2004, Jones & Komar 2006-2016, and Jones et al. 201), and served as reviewer of Guatemala data submitted to eBird from 2008 to 2015.

Compilation on avian diversity in Guatemala

We contributed a chapter on avian diversity (Eisermann & Avendaño 2006) in a book on biodiversity in Guatemala (Cano, E. 2006: Biodiversidad de Guatemala. Vol. 1. Universidad del Valle de Gutemala, Guatemala.). The bird chapter includes an updated list of bird species reliably reported in Guatemala, updated distributional information for more than 130 species, an evaluation of vulnerability on a national level using IUCN criteria (IUCN 2001), a bibliography of more than 1200 publications on Guatemalan birds from 1577 to 2004, and a list of international museums with holdings of Guatemalan bird specimens.

Checklist of the birds of Guatemala

We published a bilingual (English / Spanish) annotated checklist of the birds of Guatemala (2007, Lynx Edicions, Barcelona). This is the first fully referenced checklist to the birds of Guatemala.

Distribution and conservation of owls in Guatemala

We contributed chapters on the distribution and conservation of owls in Guatemala to two books on Neotropical owls:

Asessments of local avian diversity and noteworthy bird records

We studied the avifauna of the Cerro El Amay Important Bird Area (IBA GT006), Sacranix Important Bird Area (IBA GT007), Yalijux Important Bird Area (IBA GT010), Lachuá-Ik'bolay Important Bird Area (IBA GT008), Municipality of Sibinal (part of IBA GT013), Los Tarrales Reserve (part of IBA GT015), and Parque Regional Municipal Todos Santos Cuchumatán (part of IBA GT005), among other sites. Results have been published in several avifaunal papers and short notes on noteworthy records (e.g. Avendaño 2001, Eisermann 2005, Eisermann & Schulz 2005, Eisermann et al. 2013, Matías & Eisermann 2018).
